Hip roof support. I ve worked on homes 120 years old with 1x6 hips and no sign of bracing or king posts and no sign of failure either. Coming off in all directions. A simple hip up to a certain span is usually self supporting. Hip roofs or so called hipped roofs are a special type of roof that has a very gentle slope at the sides with a downward pattern towards the side walls.
I joists lvl hips are sometimes used to get longer spans than you could with lumber which is usually limited to 20 lengths around here. In hip roof designs all four exterior walls support the ends of roof rafters so all exterior walls bear a weight load from the roof above them. With ceiling joists properly in place the roof is supported by the fact that it is made up of 4 triangles. These 2x4 s have pushed the sheeting up an inch or so not sure how many years it has been like this but should these have been removed when the.
As many of you know a full 1 2 of the roof load for that part of the roof is at the single point where the 2 hip ridge beams meet at the top. The normal solution is to place a column under this point and carry it to the foundation. However many newer roof designs are no longer simple but are broken up with cross gables etc. Interior load bearing walls may also support the roof as they do in gable roof designs.
