Hip And Valley Roof Design And Structure

A hip roof hip roof or hipped roof is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls usually with a fairly gentle slope although a tented roof by definition is a hipped roof with steeply pitched slopes rising to a peak.
Hip and valley roof design and structure. A square hip roof is shaped like a pyramid. Most hipped approaches use a fairly gentle slope to encourage precipitation movement away from the house although tented roofs and steep grades also qualify under the technical description of this type. A hip roof features a design that slopes downwards to the walls on all sides of the structure. A full or partial gable can be found at the end of the ridge in the roof allowing for a greater amount of internal roof space.
Some hip roof designs follow pyramid shapes whereas others may have more symmetrical structures. Such buildings may have more than four hips in the roofs and they form valleys at the inside corners. Thus a hipped roof house has no gables or other vertical sides to the roof. Hip roofs can be designed over square shaped buildings as well as on rectangular ones.
A hip and valley roof may be part of an irregular structure. Each of the four sides of the roof slope downward there are no upright or vertical parts no gables etc on a hip roof. This type of roof is also called broken back hip and valley roof because the main hips are intconeected by the rafter of gables on one side and the rafter of the valley on the other. This style also improves the look of the roof providing a more unique and interesting design than the very common simple hip roof.
The dutch gable hip roof is a hybrid of a gable and hip type of roof.
