Greenboard For Tiled Bathroom Walls

Also known as greenboard or cement board moisture resistant drywall sheets use paperless backing and a special coating to prevent moisture from being absorbed better than traditional drywall sheets.

Originally greenboard was used as a direct backer board for ceramic tile in highly wet areas such as showers or bathtubs but this usage began to be phased out in the 1990s. Green board is highly efficient in bathrooms and kitchens where moisture is frequently in the air but it is not the drywall that should be set behind tile in your shower or any other areas where it can come in direct contact with water. I on the other hand have always used green board for the entire bath walls and ceiling due to the moist environment. When it is all dry remember to grout the tiles to keep them from getting water damaged.

The contractor says that he only needs to install green board here and standard drywall in the balance of the bath it is a small bath maybe 8 x 5. To do this roll on a layer of sealing primer and leave it to dry for 24 hours. Green board is water resistant it is not water proof. Greenboard is created with recycled materials which makes it ideal for an environmentally conscience choice.

Then apply tiles to this area putting spaces in between the tiles. First apply the tile adhesive to the wall in small areas. It is a good choice for painted bathroom walls and other damp rooms in place of regular drywall but is not a good option to use under. Because paper is an organic product it will quickly become moldy.

After that you can tile over the greenboard sheetrock in the same manner as you would with any other bathroom tiling. Greenboard is only slightly more water resistant than plain drywall. Repeat the previous 2 steps until the tiling is done. The installation process of greenboard is the same as blueboard and a water barrier will be needed to keep moisture away from the board.
